Save some time by finding quick answers to our most frequently received questions.
Can batteries be recycled at the landfill?
All rechargeable batteries including lithium and nickel-cadmium can be recycled at the landfill. Single-use and alkaline batteries are not accepted.
Can I recycle plastic shopping bags?
Yes! We now have a designated box in our recycling center area for plastic shopping bags. Please separate these bags from your other recyclables. If you have any questions, ask the scale attendant when you arrive!
Do my landfill loads need to be secured?
All loads arriving at the Landfill must be completely covered by a tarp or other means to prevent debris from falling from the vehicle en route to the facility. This includes bagged waste or containers unless the lids are secured with a strap. Appliances and large items can be secured with a strap.
Loads not properly covered or secured will incur an unsecured load fee of $20.00. Sorry, there are no exceptions!
Do you accept household hazardous materials?
No hazardous materials are accepted at the Mahaska County Landfill, but you can call 641-683-0685 to schedule an appointment with the Ottumwa Recycling Center. Read more details on our Household Hazardous Materials page.
What types of payments do you accept?
We accept cash, checks, and credit cards. Note that credit cards incur a flat $2.00 processing fee.
